Spirit Animals: mixed media painting and repurposed items
I cannot remember the last time I finished a painting and was not surprised. All too often, feathered, furry and scaly friends invite me to take adventures not only with them, but also within. There I find interconnectedness with nature.
My original intention was to paint in a non-objective style, something more sophisticated and abstract. The animals had other ideas.
Early on, I would begin a painting and without fail, a beak, a tail or perhaps an eye would beg to make an appearance. Finally, I gave in to their appeals.
Soon, the animals were creating themselves, first in my paintings, and later in repurposed pieces. I laughingly say that the longer I spend on a piece, the more that particular animal has to teach me.
I spend a portion of each day reading what other people have to say about animals, as archetypes and guides. In the end; however, each animal comes with a personal message for me. Likewise, I hope viewers will find their own personal connections to my work.
