|Pedernal Chert wire-wrapped pendants|
Shortly after moving to New Mexico, I discovered a wonderful, beautiful stone that is found in so many colors that it begs to be touched and examined. That stone, which is called chert, comes from the Cerro Pedernal. The early Native Americans valued this stone for making sharp tools and arrowheads; and Georgia O’Keeffe valued the mountain as evidenced by the number of times it appears in her work.
A need arose within me to show others the beauty of this stone. I polish fragments of chert found on my land, wrap the best pieces in a wire weave, and make pendants and bolos for wear or display.
